Renters let landlords know what they want

In the latest Renters Survey conducted by rental property website rent.com.au there were important insights into the changing needs of renters and their desire to customise the property they rent to make it more of a home, and therefore have longer leases.

Things they would like to change include being able to paint, modify gardens, and put up their own pictures.

Landlords prepared to accommodate such requests are more likely to attract a good long term tenant who could potentially pay more rent, but possibly increase the value of the property at their own cost.

The other big want renters clearly indicated would influence which rental they chose was the ability to have a pet. Over 70% of renters indicated this was a strong factor for them in deciding on a rental.

Other key findings from the survey demonstrated many renters are starting their apartment search earlier in the year a large volume of current homeowners and first-time renters are entering the market and having access to accurate apartment information is paramount when looking for a new place to live.. From these survey respondents who said they are current homeowners 32 percent are also first-time renters indicating a significant number of current homeowners and new renters are turning toward the rental market in 2011.
